CYGNETURE BOOK CLUB

American author Ursula K. LeGuin has been quoted as saying “There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories.” It is this truth that inspired Cygnet Theatre to launch a new program, The Cygneture Book Club, to work with local neighborhood book clubs.

Great books and short stories have inspired playwrights and adapters for generations. The majority of Shakespeare’s own plays were adapted from the books of his day! And the enjoyment of the connection between reading books and seeing live performances is a natural!

To celebrate this connection, The Cygneture Book Club is offering a suggested list of companion books to accompany each Cygnet production throughout the year. Enjoy discounts and more for one show or for the entire season!

CYGNETURE BOOK CLUB SELECTION

Selection for A behanding in spokane
BROKEN EGGSHELLS: A BLACK COMEDY IN SEVERAL HUES OF YELLOW by Christian Cook.
On one side the cultural human relationship comedy and on the other side, the gangster genre … Broken Eggshells sits in neither of these categories and yet occupies a space somewhere in between.  A group of activists decide society has become so futile that they will teach the whole planet a lesson by embarking upon a plan of equally banal terrorism.  A campaign of terror that sees bits of the Sahara and Siberia blown to kingdom come for no apparent reason. Cook revels and amuses in society's failings and shortcomings. At the back of the novel, he even takes a subtle swipe at his own literary style.
