The Student Matinee Experience
For nearly a decade, Cygnet Theatre has been offering to San Diego County K-12 schools free student matinees for select productions each season. Cygnet Theatre offers 4 student matinee performances each season. San Diego County teachers are invited to sign up to bring their class(es) to see one of the shows.
Giving our youth a rich theatre experience is important to us because it broadens their world. Regardless of the play’s time or geographic setting, each production at Cygnet Theatre has one thing in common – it speaks to some aspect of the human experience. For many students, the student matinee field trip is their first time attending a live theatre performance, and for them it is the catalyst to developing an appreciation for the arts.
Talkbacks: After each student matinee show, actors return to the stage for a talkback where they engage in conversation with students about elements of the show, the acting profession, or anything else students are interested in learning.
Pre- and Post-Show Workshops: The student matinee experience also includes pre- and postshow in-school workshops that complement students’ theatre experience. The workshops expose students to theatre topics like acting, playwriting, literature and history. The curriculum meets multiple San Diego Unified Visual and Performing Arts and California Common Core standards and helps students recognize and appreciate what it takes to produce a professional show. This program is enriching for all who participate.
